Tips for Passengers Traveling with Children

Check-in

It is recommended to check in for your flight online in advance to save time and avoid queues with little ones.

Pre-flight Nutrition

Avoid fatty and sugary foods, as they can cause nausea during the flight.

Ear Congestion

During takeoff or landing, it is recommended to give your child something to drink or a hard candy. For an infant, you can feed them, give them a pacifier, or something to drink.

Preparation

Talk to older children about airport procedures and safety rules.

Carry-on Luggage

Parents should consider what items their child might need during the flight and pack them in their carry-on luggage. Please note: Carrying toy guns in carry-on luggage is prohibited.

Airline Rules

Before purchasing travel tickets, check the carrier’s rules regarding the transportation of children’s equipment and available services for young children.

Required Documents

Child’s Travel Documents

A child must have a valid passport or identity card – a birth certificate is not a valid travel document.

Check if the document is recognized in the country you are traveling to (e.g., the UK, Turkey, Egypt require a passport). Children’s documents usually have a shorter validity period of 2–5 years, so it’s important to check their expiration date:

  • – to EU countries – at least 3 months,
  • – to other countries – at least 6 months from the start of the trip,
  • – in some countries (e.g., India) – at least 12 months.

If the document is no longer valid or has been lost, you can return to Lithuania with a Temporary Return Certificate. It is recommended to have copies of all documents.

More information about travel documents can be found here.

Travel for Unaccompanied Minors

If a child is traveling alone, airlines may have additional requirements; a notarized parental consent form may not be sufficient. Check the airline’s rules before purchasing a ticket.

Departure of Minors

If a child is flying with only one parent or is accompanied by another person, a notarized permission from the other parent or both parents may be required. A visa may also be needed if the country requires it. When flying with an adopted child, officials or staff may ask to see the adoption documents.
